Ahh, the elusive purple top. While I've owned and enjoyed many supposed incognito Willett bourbons, enjoyed Rowan's Creek and Noah's Mill thoroughly, this bottle has been impossible to put on my shelf. For good reason. They don't make a ton of this stuff. It's only the whiskey that is deemed worthy of bearing the Willett family crest. The motto listed below the crest reads 'God and my work.

However, as I got further into the bourbon world, I learned of a type of bottle that is more coveted than most (and in some instances, all) of the Buffalo Trace line, Willett "Purple Top" Bourbon. For those who are unaware, Willett is a is a company with a long history, but actually did not do any of its own distilling between the 80s and 2012.

The Willett has an 8-year age statement on it, but the specs indicate it was distilled in Spring 2013 and bottled in Summer 2022, so that technically should make it 9 years old. Strange. The stats on the bottle put it squarely in the crosshairs of the two previously mentioned wheated bourbons.

Here's a little secret (not actually), Willett didn't restart distilling until the early 2010s, so most the higher age-stated purple tops are sourced from other Kentucky distilleries.
